ART Grand Prix’s Jack Aitken stormed to pole position for the GP3 season-opener at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
The Renault F1 academy member put in a 1:34.187 late in the session to snatch first place, with Nirei Fukuzumi making it an ART front-row lock-out just under two tenths further back.
Testing pacesetter and Trident driver Dorian Boccolacci qualified third, ahead of the third ART of Mercedes F1 junior George Russell.
Arden’s Leonardo Pulcini and newly-signed Haas F1 development driver Arjun Maini, driving for Jenzer, were next up in qualifying.
Giuliano Alesi, son of ex-F1 driver Jean, was seventh fastest for Trident ahead of Alessio Lorandi in eighth.
Campos racer Marcos Siebert was six tenths off the pole position time in ninth, while the final ART of Anthoine Hubert completed the top 10.
Niko Kari was in 11th for Arden, while Raoul Hyman made a late improvement in the final moments to move up to 12th for Campos – ahead of his GP3 debut.
The DAMS drivers struggled during the session, Santino Ferrucci was only 14th, while Tatiana Calderón was 18th and Bruno Baptista 19th.
