Prema driver Charles Leclerc secured pole position for the Formula 2 feature race in Barcelona after beating Russian Time’s Luca Ghiotto.
Ferrari junior driver Leclerc put in a late lap to score his second consecutive pole position, with his 1:29.285 being enough to snatch the top spot on the grid.
Ghiotto held first place in the final stages but missed out by just one tenth of a second, with early leader Nyck de Vries in third for Rapax.
Jordan King will start fourth for MP Motorsport, ahead of ART’s Alexander Albon, who was four tenths off pole position.
Oliver Rowland recovered from a slow start to qualifying and will complete the third row on the grid in sixth, with Norman Nato and Leclerc’s Prema team-mate Antonio Fuoco next up.
DAMS racer Nicholas Latifi and ART’s Nobuharu Matsushita complete the top 10 on the grid for the F2 feature race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Former F1 driver and experienced single-seater racer Roberto Merhi made his debut in the category and was 15th in his first qualifying session.
He was just ahead of Johnny Cecotto Jr, who suffered a late spin, while Nabil Jeffri was last of the 20 runners after stopping and causing a red flag with under six minutes to go.
