Fernando Alonso's first practice power unit failure was caused by an oil leak according to Honda, which caused the Spaniard to stop on circuit after just three corners of his out-lap this morning.
Alonso's McLaren came to a stop after a half spin caused by the rear-axle locking following a failure of the power unit. With smoke and oil pouring from his MCL32, he quickly exited the cockpit as the recovery team set about removing his stricken car from the track.
Honda later confirmed the cause of the incident was an oil leak and a new power unit would be fitted for second practice.
"[It was an] oil leak on Fernando's car," a Honda spokesperson confirmed. "The issue is under investigation.
"In the interest of time we are changing the power unit. He will be back out on track during FP2.
Honda confirmed much of the hybrid system would remain unchanged, whilst the power unit change wouldn't result in a penalty.
