Haas driver Romain Grosjean says he will not receive the team’s upgrade package until Saturday at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Haas, as with the bulk of the Formula 1 teams, is bringing a substantial raft of updates to the first European round of the campaign at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, as it bids to make progress.
However, only one update package has been readied in time for Friday’s practice sessions, with Kevin Magnussen tasked with debuting the upgrades.
Grosjean, meanwhile, will not have the new parts fitted to his VF-17 until Saturday, reducing his window in order to exploit the potential of the updates.
“Unfortunately I won’t have it until Saturday, so that’s not ideal,” Grosjean said of the “pretty big” upgrades.
“There’s only one available right now and I didn’t get it, so it’s not ideal because it’s a big change, lots of [new] things on the car, I don’t know what tomorrow is going to be for us."
On why Magnussen was given the package, Grosjean replied, “It was a coin toss. Never been lucky with that!”
Grosjean also feels that Williams and Force India have emerged as the leading contenders of the midfield package.
“Williams, Force India, then there’s a mix, Renault, Toro Rosso and ourselves,” he said when asked about the mid-grid order.
“It’s changing all the time, [but] Williams and Force India are faster.”
