Gabby Chaves will make a return to IndyCar at the 101st Indianapolis 500 in May with brand new team Harding Racing, with the Colombian racer set to compete in the No. 88 Chevrolet-powered machine.
The 2014 Indy Lights champion made his IndyCar debut with Bryan Herta Autosport in 2015, earning Rookie of the Year with a personal best finish of ninth in race two at the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.
The new team has been created by a technical allegiance between Mike Harding of Harding Group and Dennis Reinbold of Dreyer & Reinbold Racing
Despite pulling out of full-time competition after the 2013 Indianapolis 500, Dreyer & Reinbold Racing has still returned to the Brickyard each year since and aim to do so once again this season with Sage Karam.
Harding Racing has appointed Larry Curry as their team manager and competition director, while Chaves will benefit greatly from the experience of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr., who will serve as the team’s driving instructor.
"I'm extremely delighted to have the opportunity to get to challenge for my third Indy 500," enthused Chaves.
"I am very excited to be joining a new team with our new owner, Mike Harding, and everyone involved, including Larry Curry, who has been instrumental in getting the team together and guiding it.
"I have complete faith and confidence that our engine partner Chevy will give us the best package and support to give our Harding Racing machine a chance to challenge for the win.
”I've had good races at IMS, although the result has never come together.
“But I think this is the year that I really have to put it together to get the result.
“That's my main focus, and I definitely think I'm going to have one of the best programs out there among those focused on Indy only.”
