Red Bull Racing has changed Daniel Ricciardo’s gearbox for the Australian Grand Prix, giving the driver a five-place grid penalty.
The home favourite crashed into the barrier mid-way through Q3 after a spin at Turn 14, with his car backing into the wall.
He was yet to put in a timed lap before the crash, meaning he ended qualifying in 10th position.
Red Bull changed his gearbox ahead of the 2017 season opener in Melbourne, giving him a grid drop.
Gearboxes are meant to last for six consecutive events and if that rule is broken, a penalty is applied.
Ricciardo will now start the Australian GP in 15th place. Lewis Hamilton starts on pole position for Mercedes, ahead of Sebastian Vettel.
