Sauber Team Principal Monisha Kaltenborn is sure that Pascal Wehrlein can continue to flourish in Formula 1 after he joined the squad for his sophomore season.
Wehrlein, 22, competed for Manor in his rookie campaign in motorsport’s top echelon, scoring a point at the Austrian Grand Prix and securing a Q2 berth on five occasions.
Sauber confirmed on Monday that Mercedes protégé Wehrlein will link up with Marcus Ericsson at the outfit and Kaltenborn is optimistic that the partnership will boost the team.
“We are very pleased to confirm Pascal as our second race driver for the 2017 season,” said Kaltenborn.
“Pascal has shown his talent throughout his career – in single seater racing as well as in the DTM.
“Last year in his rookie Formula 1 season, he proved his potential by scoring one point in the Austrian Grand Prix.
“There is surely more to come from Pascal, and we want to give him the chance to further grow and learn at the pinnacle of motorsport.
“I am confident Marcus and Pascal will form a solid combination for 2017.”
Sauber finished in 10th position in the 2016 standings courtesy of Felipe Nasr’s points in Brazil, which enabled it to leapfrog Manor.
