British terrestrial television broadcaster Channel 5 has confirmed it has secured the UK rights to broadcast Formula E for the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons.
The all-electric championship has been shown on ITV since its inaugural season, but after two seasons the British channel dumped its coverage following disappointing ratings.
Although the London rounds attracted strong audiences on the main ITV channel, the remaining rounds were shown on ITV4 and failed to attract anywhere near the same numbers, leading to their decision not to renew.
It was feared Formula E may struggle to find a replacement broadcaster – which many believe is key to its future success – leading to suggestions it may be broadcast on YouTube instead. However on Tuesday Channel 5 confirmed it had secured the rights.
All races will be shown live on Channel 5, with qualifying broadcast live on sister channel Spike.
The new seasons kicks off on October 9 starting in Hong Kong, ending in New York on July 30.
