Lewis Hamilton claimed his fifth Canadian Grand Prix victory – leaving him just two short of Michael Schumacher’s record – after a strategy error for Sebastian Vettel cost the German a shot at the win.
The Briton lost out to Vettel at the start of the race as the Ferrari driver got an excellent getaway to jump both Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, whilst Rosberg managed to pull alongside Hamilton at Turn 1.
The Mercedes pair made brief contact, with Hamilton forcing his team-mate to run wide and cut across the grass, with Rosberg rejoining down in seventh, before dropping down to a low of tenth.
Meanwhile Vettel pulled away in the lead, opening up a three second gap after just a single lap, but a mistake on his second – cutting the final chicane – brought Hamilton back into play, closing the gap to just under a second.
A virtual safety car for Jenson Button's stranded McLaren forced Ferrari into a a new strategy as they called the race leader into the pits, putting him on the supersoft tyre, but just as that played out, the VSC ended and Hamilton stayed out, opting to continue with his original one-stop strategy.
Although just five seconds down on Hamilton, Vettel couldn't close up and only retook the lead when Hamilton pitted. But the German would be forced to pit once again later in the race and would hand the lead back to the Briton.
Although Vettel was initially quicker, passing cars to get behind Hamilton once again, the times began to level off and two errors – cutting the chicane twice – dropped Vettel back further, handing the win to Hamilton.
Meanwhile Valtteri Bottas drove a brilliant race to claim the final spot, having fought his way through from seventh on the grid.
Rosberg would eventually finish fifth. His luck didn't return during the race as he first suffered a slow puncture, forcing him to make an unscheduled stop and then a spin on the penultimate lap as he attempted to claim fourth from Max Verstappen ensured he finished no higher.
Kimi Raikkonen was sixth ahead of Daniel Ricciardo, Nico Hulkenberg, Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez completing the top ten.
