Fernando Alonso says his future in Formula 1 hangs on whether or not the next generation of cars, set to debut in 2017, are enjoyable to drive.
Next year will see wider cars and wider tyres aimed at producing greater downforce to decrease lap times by around four to five seconds, which team bosses believe will make the cars more challenging and therefore more enjoyable to drive.
Alonso's McLaren contract is set to expire at the end of next season and he will therefore get a taste of the new cars before new contract negotiations begin, but he warned that he would look at other series if he no longer enjoys F1.
"At the moment I want to keep driving, because it's my passion and it's probably the only thing that I'm sure that I know how do. There are other things, still to be discovered, that I am able to do in my life," he told ESPN.
"But still driving will be the first priority. Formula 1 will be the priority, if next year the cars are enjoyable and I feel happy. If not, there will be other categories. I've said many times winning the 24 Hour Le Mans will be a nice target for me. And then we will see."
The Spaniard insists he wouldn't have any regrets if he retired from F1 without adding to his two titles, despite coming close on a number of occasions.
"I don't regret any decision, because at the time that I made the decisions, my heart told me to take the decisions and I'm happy with them you. I prefer to be a happy man than to have two more trophies in the home."
