Max Verstappen will start the Monaco Grand Prix from the pitlane, Red Bull have confirmed, after qualifying 21st, having crashed out during Q1.
The Dutchman, who won on his debut with the team a fortnight ago, clipped the barrier at the Swimming Pool, which broke his suspension, which meant he couldn't steer and simply ran into the armco barrier, ending his session early.
With his chassis sustaining damage in the crash, Red Bull have opted to start the 18-year-old from the pitlane in the spare chassis, which will be built up on Saturday evening and could allow the team to gamble on a wet weather setup for the race.
"It’s of course not the way you want to start for tomorrow, I turned in a bit too early, clipped the inside wall, broke the inside suspension and then couldn’t turn anymore," explained Verstappen.
"These things unfortunately happen and you have to learn from it and continue," he said after the session.
Verstappen is hopeful of making up some places on Sunday, despite it being notoriously difficult to overtake around Monaco.
"Hopefully there will be a lot of action tomorrow, not only from me but from others. It will be very tough but I won’t give up.
"The car is great, we just have to find a way to get past the people in front. It will depend a lot on the strategy, what other people do of course and the weather, so hopefully we have some luck tomorrow."
