Nico Rosberg will start the Russian Grand Prix from pole position after going unchallenged during the final top-ten shoot-out when team-mate Lewis Hamilton's engine failed on his Q2 in-lap, consigning him to the garage for the remainder of the session.
Rosberg's 1m35.417s time dominated Q3 as Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel finished seven-tenths adrift in second – though the German will start seventh after serving a gearbox penalty.
That promotes third-placed Valtteri Bottas from third to second for the race, with the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen qualifying fourth, to start third ahead of Felipe Massa.
Also promoted due to Vettel's penalty are Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo in sixth and Force India's Sergio Perez, seventh.
Completing the top ten will be Daniil Kvyat and Max Verstappen with Hamilton tenth, having failed to take part in Q3 when yet more bad luck struck the Briton when an engine issue forced him to retire from the session.
McLaren's Jenson Button narrowly missed out on what would be his first Q3 slot since 2014. The Briton starts 12th, two places ahead of Fernando Alonso in 14th, with the pair split by just over a tenth and a half and a Force India of Nico Hulkenberg.
Lining up 15th and 16th will be the two Haas cars ahead of both Renaults, whilst Sauber's Nasr managed to outqualify both Manor cars. The second Sauber of Ericsson starts 22nd and last.
