Sebastian Vettel ended the second day of Formula 1 pre-season testing in Barcelona fastest for Ferrari, setting the pace on Pirelli’s new ultra-soft tyre.
Vettel, fastest at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya on Monday on the medium compound, posted a 1m22.810s late in the morning session to end the day quickest.
The German managed 126 laps before triggering a late red flag in the final minutes of running.
Daniel Ricciardo briefly topped the times in the final hour before lunch, before he was overturned by Vettel on the ultra-soft rubber.
Nico Rosberg completed a massive 172 laps, more than any driver managed in a single day during winter testing last year, on route to fourth, as Mercedes once again concentrated on mileage.
Mercedes was just one of a remarkable eight teams – alongside Ferrari, Red Bull, Sauber, Williams, McLaren, Toro Rosso and Force India – to pass the 100 lap mark on Tuesday.
Sergio Perez was third overall on the super-soft tyre, 0.840s shy of Vettel’s pace on his first run in the new Force India, after compatriot Alfonso Celis Jr debuted the VJM09 on Monday.
Marcus Ericsson, running on the soft compound, lapped fifth quickest in the 2015 Sauber, with the new car set to debut at next week’s test.
Esteban Gutierrez underlined Haas’ credentials with a run to sixth, 2.7s shy of pacesetter Vettel, like Ericsson lapping on the of the softs.
After the team’s programme was interrupted by a front-wing mount failure on Monday, the Mexican managed 79 laps in the all-new car.
Valtteri Bottas completed a quiet day for Williams in seventh, three tenths clear of Pascal Wehrlein’s Manor, with both drivers setting their best times on the soft Pirellis.
Fernando Alonso racked up 119 laps – more than he managed in the whole of pre-season testing last year – on the way to ninth on the leaderboard for McLaren-Honda.
After 37 laps on Monday, Jolyon Plamer and Renault completed 42 on Tuesday before the British racer was forced to park his RS16 at the exit of Turn 2, with smoke pouring from the rear of the car.
Max Verstappen rounded out the order for Toro Rosso, 3.729s off the pace on the hard tyre.
The 17-year-old still managed to put 121 laps on the board, despite causing an early stoppage in the morning.
