McLaren F1 reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne has been announced at the Dandelion Racing team for the 2016 Super Formula season.
The Belgian racer has made the switch to the Japanese single-seater series, replacing ex-F1 driver Narain Karthikeyan and joining Tomoki Nojiri at the Honda-powered outfit.
Vandoorne will race in the championship alongside his testing duties with McLaren, to stay race sharp while waiting for a seat on the F1 grid.
The 2015 GP2 champion previously tested for the Dandelion Racing team at the Suzuka circuit last November, although engine issues meant his run was limited to just 20 laps.
The news of his drive in Super Formula was made in an announcement of Honda’s 2016 motorsport plans. The series includes engine competition from Honda and Toyota, with the latter dominating last season.
The 2016 Super Formula calendar features seven rounds, with two F1 clashes. He will not be available for reserve driver duties with McLaren for the Monaco Grand Prix and Mexican Grand Prix.
