Formula 1’s official tyre supplier Pirelli has called for increased testing ahead of the proposed shake up of the technical regulations for the 2017 season.
While the exact technical regulations are still to be determined, F1 is set for its biggest rules shakeup since the introduction of the hybrid V6 turbo engines back in 2014.
Teams will be restricted to just eight days of testing this season, but Pirelli is calling for more running as it looks to design its tyres for the next generation of grand prix car.
Pirelli will meet with F1’s major stakeholders next week in an effort to finalise a mandate for its tyres ahead of 2017.
“In 2017 the technical aspects will become even more complex, so Pirelli is even more convinced of the need to carry out more on-track testing,” reads a statement.
“This is a factor that has been extremely limited in recent years, despite the important evolution of the cars and subsequent increase in performance.
“All these are vital steps towards tyre development that takes into account the future evolution of the cars and added performance, which will be particularly notable in 2017.
“This will allow an even more effective use of the advanced technology that makes Pirelli the world leader in performance tyres.”
