Fernando Alonso believes McLaren has “logical solutions” to close the gap significantly, and if they work as intended, 2016 will be a completely different season for the Woking team.
McLaren and its engine partner Honda struggled during their first season together since their success in the late-1980s, with Jenson Button and Alonso scoring just 27 points in 2015.
But with the major problems identified and “solutions” put in place, Alonso is expecting a big gain from both the chassis and engine, which he believes will result in a completely different picture next season.
“If we apply some of the solutions and everything is working as we expect, the laptime benefit will be very big,” he told Autosport.
“There are solutions in place which are logical and quite good and keep the motivation very high because I think [2016] will be a completely different picture.”
The Spaniard recently declared a two second gain wouldn’t be impossible and he is sticking by that assessment.
“Everyone will improve between 0.5s and one second,” he added. “With us being two seconds off the pace, we need to do more than 0.5s or one second.
When asked if two seconds was still the aim, he replied: “I think it will be relatively more than that.”
