Valtteri Bottas has been handed a three-place grid penalty for overtaking under red flags during second practice for the Brazilian Grand Prix.
The red flags were brought out when Fernando Alonso’s McLaren came to a halt with engine troubles at the exit of Bico de Pato.
“The driver of car 77 admitted he overtook car 12 under red flags,” said an FIA statement.
“The Stewards in applying the penalty took into consideration that despite the considerable speed difference between the cars, the driver of car 77 could have avoided overtaking under the red flag.”
The Williams driver will therefore start three places lower than he qualifies on Saturday.
The Finn was also handed two penalty points on his FIA Super Licence.
