Fernando Alonso says he would be surprised if McLaren aren’t “very competitive” in 2016, admitting another season like the current one would be “disappointing”.
The Spaniard recently admitted he was driving in “economy mode” as McLaren-Honda’s struggles have hit his motivation levels, but insists he will give his all next year regardless of whether his car is on the lead pace or not.
However he says he would be surprised if he wasn’t racing much closer to the front next season, as both McLaren and Honda have identified the areas they need to improve on over the winter.
“If we go to testing and we have a bad car, first it will be a surprise for me, it will also be a disappointment for me,” he said in Brazil.
“It will be sad to do that from the beginning, but it would be a surprise for me if we are not very, very competitive next year,” he stated.
“We have everything, the car is responding well, aerodynamically we have the direction to go in, we are improving and I see when I am on the track how we attack the corners and how fast we are in the corners, so I am not afraid that next year’s car will not be at the top level.”
