Renault has given Red Bull the option of using its heavily upgraded engine at the United States Grand Prix this weekend.
The French manufacturer had yet to dip into its remaining 12 development tokens prior to this upgrade, but has done so ahead of the race in Austin. It hasn’t confirmed quite how many of the 12 it has used, but it’s believed to be the majority.
The decision to use the engine however remains solely Red Bull’s choice, though both Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat would face grid penalties as a result of making the change as both have already exhausted their current allocation.
Renault hasn’t made the upgrade available for Toro Rosso this weekend as it has limited parts.
The upgrade is believed to focus around the internal combustion engine and turbo, with Renault looking to close its horsepower deficit to both Ferrari and Mercedes.
