Fernando Alonso will not leave McLaren over the winter according to fellow Spaniard Carlos Sainz, who insists the two-time champion is a ‘fighter’.
There have been reports suggesting that Alonso has given McLaren and Honda an ultimatum for 2016, including performance targets, which if not met, could see him walk away mid-season.
However Sainz is certain Alonso will stick with the project: “Yes, he will be on the grid next year because he has to give [McLaren-Honda] a chance,” the Toro Rosso driver told Spain’s AS.
“I think they will do well, not everything goes well the first time and I think Fernando will fight.
“The truth is that this year has been a bump for him at McLaren-Honda, but I do not see him throwing in the towel because Fernando is a fighter, a samurai, and I think he will give it another chance.
“They can only go forward, it’s not going to get worse.”
