Carlos Sainz was fastest for Toro Rosso during a very wet opening practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix which saw just 12 drivers set a time.
Sainz mastered the conditions to set a 1:49.434, half a second quicker than Red Bull’s Daniil Kvyat, whilst Nico Rosberg was third fastest for Mercedes.
There were some scary moments for several drivers; Valtteri Bottas, Max Verstappen, Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen all did well not to end up in the wall.
