Sergio Perez has admitted he held serious talks with Renault about joining the French manufacturers potential new works team, before finally deciding to remain at Force India.
The Mexican driver had been linked with a move to Lotus – the target of a Renault takeover – to replace Romain Grosjean. However despite it being a “serious option”, he confirmed on Wednesday that he’d signed a new one-year deal with his current team.
“Obviously you always listen to other options and other offers, and obviously Renault – if they come – they are a very attractive team,” Perez said of the interest.
“But at the moment, I knew that the best for me and the best place available was staying here [at Force India].”
When asked if his decision came down to the uncertainty over Renault’s takeover of Lotus, he replied: “No. It has nothing to do with that.
“It was obviously a serious option but for me I always made my mind clear, knowing the prospects of the team and knowing what we were doing in the background.
“That is why I always wanted to stay. I am very happy to stay.”
