Williams Formula 1 team technical director Pat Symonds has been impressed by the performances of Felipe Massa since the Brazilian joined the team.
Massa ended his seven-year relationship with Ferrari at the end of 2013 to join the Grove-based squad, replacing the Lotus bound Pastor Maldonado.
The 34-year old, who sits sixth in the drivers’ standings with 74 points, took three podium finishes in his inaugural season with Williams, helping them claim to third in the constructors’ championship.
Massa has also pushed his highly rated team-mate Valtteri Bottas, who continues to be linked with a Ferrari drive, with just three points separating the two in this year’s championship.
Speaking to Autosport, Symonds expressed his admiration of the Brazilian and admitted he has exceeded his expectations.
“When we signed Felipe, I was personally very happy because I know Fernando [Alonso] very well and I know anyone who races Fernando is very good,” Symonds said.
“Felipe could race Fernando and did race Fernando.
“But even I was surprised by just how well he has fitted into the team.
“By putting him into an environment where he is respected, he has delivered even more than I thought he could do.”
