Red Bull reject Ferrari president’s engine-supply offer

Red Bull’s Christian Horner has turned down an offer from Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne after the Italian-Canadian offered to supply the rival team with engines.

Red Bull is struggling with performance this season, scoring an average of just seven points per race between two cars, with the team putting the vast majority of the blame on its power unit partner Renault.

It has also suffered numerous failures and it already on its fifth engine of the season on both cars, leading to public criticism from team owner Dietrich Mateschitz.

But Horner says Red Bull are determined to win again with Renault, despite Ferrari’s offer of help and engines, which he kindly declined on Sunday.

“First of all, we have a contract with Renault, so there is no decision to make,” said Horner.

“Sergio generously offered us his engine, but I suppose he did not disclose to you the terms on which he offers them,” he added.

Both Horner and Mateschitz have rejected the idea of becoming a customer team as they both believe it would be impossible to win races and championships.

Therefore they are both keen to see Renault improve, or face quitting the sport.

“We still want to win, but you can’t win a horse race with a Shetland pony.”
