Nico Rosberg today was in a positive frame of mind for the forthcoming Canadian Grand Prix. Having arrived on the back of two consecutive wins, the second of which being a self-admittedly fortunate one, he feels is all the more reason to have a confident mindset.
“I have a positive experience behind me, that helps,” he said today. “It’s better than having a bad one, for sure. So that’s how I’m going into this weekend. Good to go of course.”
When it was suggested that the Monaco win had ‘fallen into his lap’ Rosberg countered, “you’ve got to be there to receive the falling thing.”
But he admitted to conflicted feelings about the win: “Maybe yes [it was] one of the luckiest [wins I’ve had]. For sure it wasn’t as emotional as the previous years where it was thanks to my own performance that it worked out.
“Also because part of me really felt for the other side of the garage who really would have deserved it…that took some joy away.”
Rosberg’s positive mindset is helped too by his strong performance in Montreal last season, when he beat his team-mate Lewis Hamilton to pole then finished second to Daniel Ricciardo after having to nurse problems related to overheating ERS for much of the race.
“Of course it went well for me here last year, it was one of my best races of the year, so good memories there. I feel comfortable at this track, so that’s it.”
Rosberg also said that the Mercedes team was confident that the ERS overheating problems that afflicted both Mercedes cars in last year’s race should not be repeated.
“This is the most challenging track for that [problem], why I don’t actually know, probably that the straights are the longest here…but we should have that under control.”
