Renault Sport F1’s managing director Cyril Abiteboul hinted at a return to team ownership for the French manufacturer last month as part of a marketing effort.
Now Red Bull’s Helmut Marko has confirmed they are in talks with Renault about the potential sale of its sister team, Toro Rosso.
“It is true that we are speaking with Renault about another form of cooperation regarding Toro Rosso.
“It may be that the cars go completely in yellow or there may even be a takeover,” he told the APA news agency.
Renault claim they’re not receiving enough exposure by simply supplying engines and believe a return to team ownership would help to boost their image.
However it comes following increasing criticism of their power unit from Red Bull, with Marko threatening to pull the team out of Formula 1 if things don’t improve.
Despite these claims, the Austrian insisted Red Bull isn’t for sale.
