Bernie Ecclestone says he wants the final three races of the season to be worth double points, not just the last race, but admits the plan could be dropped altogether.
The 83-year-old believes it would keep the championship alive for longer and therefore ensuring television audiences remain interested until longer into the season.
The proposal for three races to be worth double points was put to the F1 Strategy Group, but they voted in favour of just the final race. However with another meeting planned for January at the request of Luca di Montezemolo, the idea could be scrapped altogether.
“Personally my preference would be for the final three races to be worth double points,” Ecclestone told The Daily Telegraph.
“But it may well be that the rule is cancelled altogether at the next meeting in January,” he added.
“I think it should be the final three races or nothing.
“The final three races would mean the championship is kept interesting for everyone – fans, press and television – right until the end.”
