Valencia to takeover Spanish GP until 2021?

The Valencia Street Circuit, which currently hosts the European Grand Prix, is set to become the only race in Spain from next year according to reports in Spain.

The report on Cadena SER Radio claims the promoter for Valencia is in the process of negotiating a ten-year contract extension with Bernie Ecclestone, which would see the port-side circuit host the Spanish GP, not the European GP, until 2021.

The report also claims that the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona will lose its right to host the Spanish race and will not pick up the European contract as Ecclestone looks to cut the provisional 21-race calendar for 2012 to 20 races.

FIA president Jean Todt confirmed that such a cut would happen, but he wasn’t sure which race would be lost.

“There are 21 dates, but the championship will be 20 grands prix,” he said. “We don’t know which one will go, but the championship will be 20 races.”

The Barcelona circuit’s current contract expires at the end of the current season, however negotiations were underway to extend its own contract through to 2016 – though the Spanish report goes on to suggest that talks have fallen through between Ecclestone and Salvador Servia, the races promoter.
