Fernando Alonso has praised the teams performance in Canada after the Italian outfit managed to get both cars in the top three, though they couldn’t quite beat Sebastian Vettel to pole.
Alonso will start in second ahead of team-mate Felipe Massa, both taking their best qualifying positions of the year, of which the Spaniard is thrilled.
“It’s the best result of the year for the team, second and third,” he said after the session. “Two tenths behind Red Bull is a much better than we expected and a much better result than in the first six races [of the season].
“We’re happy with today’s performance from the car and the whole weekend has been very smooth for us, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”
With a closer gap to the front and changeable conditions expected on Sunday, Alonso is confident in his ability to win in Montreal.
“As Seb[astian Vettel] said, I think the conditions are likely to change, so maybe it’s the least important qualifying of the year unfortunately. But it’s always better to start at the front and I think tomorrow with all the cards on the table, we will have a chance to win the race for sure.”
