Fernando Alonso insists that the current “no in-season testing” rule limits the chances for rookie drivers to improve their skills, as well as allowing veteran drivers to get used to changes in technical regulations.
The Spaniard said, “I like 20 races, [because] I like racing and competing, so to have more races is welcome,”
“But I also like testing, so I’d like 20 races and more testing. It’s not easy and it’s unfair for new drivers that they cannot test more.”
All teams and drivers are given four pre-season test dates before the season starts, and this is the only time the teams have to get data and look at improving their cars.
When asked why a driver of his calibre would require any more testing sessions, the 2005/06 champion insisted that it was so they could get used to the new “gadgets.”
“The cars will certainly be more complex to handle on the part of the driver because we will have more operations to carry out – There will be the return of KERS and the new adjustable rear wing,” the Spaniard explained.
Restrictions on in-season testing have become more and more severe of recent times as the sport’s governing body, the FIA, looks to cut costs within the sport.
