Sir Frank Williams was honoured at the 2010 BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) ceremony in Birmingham on Sunday.

The founder of the Williams F1 team was awarded the Helen Rollason award which recognises an ‘outstanding achievement in the face of adversity.’

The 68-year-old suffered a serious spinal cord injury in 1986 which has resulted in him having to use a wheelchair, however his injury has never stopped him from doing what he loves and he continues to manage the outfit.

The team, based in Grove, Oxfordshire, had already won two constructor’s title’s and two driver’s title’s prior to the accident, adding a further seven constructor’s and five driver’s championships after.

He was joined on stage by Eddie Jordan, Martin Brundle, Patrick Head, Christian Horner, Sir Jackie Stewart and Nigel Mansell to receive the award.

Helen Rollason, a former BBC sports presenter and the first female presenter of Grandstand, died in August 1999 at the age of 43 after suffering from cancer for two years.

She helped raise over £5 million to set up a cancer wing at the North Middlesex Hospital, where she received most of her treatment.
