McLaren have decided to remove their new blown-diffuser after it became clear that the update wasn’t giving the desired effect.
The MP4-25 won’t feature the new exhaust layout for the remainder of the British GP, however, the team believe they have identified areas in which it needs improving – meaning it will return for the next round in Germany.
Both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button were between 1.5 and 2 seconds off the pace of Mark Webber’s Red Bull in second practice. It became apparent that the McLaren was unstable in some high speed corners as Hamilton ran off the track on numerous occasions, as he pushed to find the limit.
Button admitted there is still a lot of work to be done with the new package.
“First of all I couldn’t get a set-up for the car with the new package, but it improved at the end of the day, but there’s still a lot of work we need to do. We are not where we’d like to be. The car is very tricky in a few places around the circuit.
“We’ve definitely made some improvements in certain places, but we don’t have the right balance yet. I haven’t had a perfect day today, which is disappointing because even on a Friday it’s good to see so many people out there.”
The McLaren mechanics spent the night removing the updates and reverting the car back to its previous set-up.
